Monbetsu Drift Ice Adventure 7 – Handmade Kamaboko at Idezuka Suisan
"Kamaboko" is a kind of fish paste used for traditional fried Japanese fish cakes. Idezuka Suisan, a corner shop in the Monbetsu port, is a specialty shop dedicated to making kamaboko from Okhotsk scallops and other fish native to Hokkaido.
The shop offers a variety of kamaboko from rare scallop to western style bacon-cheese flavors. What’s unique about this shop is that you choose what cakes you want and the shop fries them up fresh for you.

After making my choices, I took them to be fried.
The freshly fried kamaboko smell so good but once you start to eat them, there’s no stopping!
One more interesting aspect of this shop is that you can make your own kamaboko! You can actually choose the type of fish paste that you want, mix it all together with added flavors, and make your own fresh kamaboko. I tried it too!
The staff told me that the trick is to mix the paste very thoroughly. This will make the cake very light and airy.
The scent of the kamaboko wafts up from the fryer, and you know the cake is done once you see it start to float. Now we’re ready eat!
The shop will nicely box your fresh kamaboko so it’s easily taken home, but there’s also an eating space on the second floor if you’d like to sample the kamaboko before going home.
