Created with students became a massive hit from words-of-mouth! Clothes with Hokkaido University marks

Hokkaido University is huge. Sapporo campus is 7 kilometers around. There are over 20,000 students, exchanged students, professors, and staffs! The scale of the place makes Hokkaido University a melting pot of knowledge.

The target of this article is not studies of Hokkaido University, its products. I visited Hokkaido University Co-op to hear everything about it.

「いま、イチオシのパーカーを着てきました」と颯爽と登場です▲Hiroshi Honma, the manager (on the right) and Koichi Kasai, the leader (on the left) of the purchasing department welcomed me.

Let’s talk about clothes first.

Many universities abroad offer various clothes with universities’ logo or symbol marks such as UCLA in the United States. And not only students but also alumni and people in the neighborhood wear them as everyday clothes.

Honma saw that when he visited in an inspection tour. “I felt wearing clothes with universities’ marks represents attachment to the school. At that moment, a fire lit in me. I want such clothes for Hokkaido University! We need it! I will definitely make it!”

The symbol mark of Hokkaido University is inspired by Trillium flowers which grow wild in the university. They decided to create a hoodie with this mark in the design for the first product.

The six directions consist of petals and sepals represents Hokkaido University offering information to Japan and the world.

They valued the product to be: (1) without too large marks, but marks must stand out, (2) comfortable to wear and easy to match with other clothes, (3) price that everyone could afford. The finishing product looks like this:

▲上の写真は今年4月に販売開始したファスナータイプのパーカー(3,400円)、下は左がパーカー(3,000円)、右がスウェットで、パーカーとセットで5,000円。いずれもネイビー、グレーの2色があり、S・M・L・XLの4サイズ▲The picture above is a hoodie with zippers which came out in April 2019. (3,400 yen) The bottom one is a regular hoodie. (3,000 yen) The right one is sweatpants, sold as a set with a hoodie at 5,000 yen. Both items are offered in two colors, navy and gray, and four sizes S, M, L, and XL.

Students of Hokkaido University cooperated for fitting. The finished product sold more than their expectations by word-of-mouth from older students to younger students. They also get requests to make bigger sizes from exchange students and tourists from overseas.

Honma already had in mind to make T-shirts after hoodie. He made T-shirts with the same design as hoodie intentionally. He also was particular about the textile; quick-dry textile so that people can use it comfortably while playing sports, too.

They offer four colors: green which is close to the school color of Hokkaido, navy which matches to any clothes, pink which looks bright, and orthodox white. It prints the symbol mark near the chest and “HOKKAIDO UNIV.” on the back.

100%▲Vivid colors look bright in the campus with lots of greens. They offer four sizes for all four colors, S, M, L, and XL. Each T-shirt is 1,620 yen and 100% polyester.

The best seller is “Hokkaido Milk Cookies - Sapporo Agricultural College,” which is also a standard souvenir of Hokkaido

They offer other products with Hokkaido University’s symbol marks such as snacks and foods.

Their best-seller is “Hokkaido Milk Cookie - Sapporo Agricultural College.” Honma is very proud of this cookie and said, “We use plenty of butter and flours from Hokkaido for this cookie. The crunchy and smooth texture has attracted many people.”

商品の売上の一部は、北大の教育支援にあてられています▲They offer three cookies pack for 151 yen, 12 cookies pack for 540 yen, 24 cookies pack for 1,080 yen, 48 cookies pack for 2,160 yen. Parts of the sells to this cookie are used for education support in Hokkaido University.

“Sapporo Agricultural College” is the predecessor of Hokkaido University who educated people for development and agriculture in Hokkaido under Doctor Clark, etc. The retro-style design of the package creates an atmosphere of good-old-days.

“I have heard that the design made by tracing the guidebook for applicants to Hokkaido Agricultural College,” Kasai said. Hokkaido University Archives keep the original copy.

The newest food products with the symbol mark are “Hokkaido Gagome Kombu Candy.” It is the latest product created by using Hokudai-Gagome, the brand of Hokkaido University.

1袋594円▲The package design shows green candy from the Hokkaido-shaped hole. It is packaged into each piece, which is also a great point. 594 yen for a bag.

Hokudai Gagome is a kind of Gagome Kombu which was created with “Hokudai Marine Cultivation” technology developed by Hokkaido University Fisheries Sciences department in Hakodate. Hokudai Gagome is getting noticed because it contains more than double amount of Fucoidan, which is said to work to prevent metabolic syndrome, than natural Gagome Kombu.

“This candy makes us enjoy the aroma and flavor of Kombu, and slightly sticky texture more and more as we eat it. This mysterious flavor makes us addicted.” Kasai told me with a smile.

Cookie with Hokkaido University’s tradition and candies to tell the current Hokkaido University. You might be able to tell a lot of stories when you take both of them home.

The new iconic products produced by an art director who has reputations from Europe and North America

Hokkaido University will celebrate its 143rd anniversary in 2019. They created the new Hokkaido University’s brand visual to communicate more broadly in the era with various diversities.

The design is very fashionable that it looks like a package of cosmetics.

Junya Kamata, the art director, based in Sapporo and works in all areas of Japan, did the design. He is an emerging designer, getting noticed both nationally and internationally, as he won various awards such as “New York ONE SHOW,” “London D&AD,” “Good Design Award,” etc.

Kamata expresses “human” with Trillium flowers and a mixture of knowledge, characteristics, and diversity with this design. Isn’t the beautiful silhouette of Trillium makes academic and fashionable impressions?

These stationeries use this visual for the design. They developed the products for students to use, but it seems suitable for use at offices and occasions related to hobbies as well. I can understand this series is popular for females.

▲左から時計回りに、A4ノートシルバー250円、コースター2枚セット250円、マスキングテープ(大花、小花)各371円、フリクション2色ボールペン510円▲From the left to clockwise: A4 size silver notebook 250 yen, two pieces set coasters 250 yen, masking tapes (small flower prints and large flower prints) 371 yen each, FriXion pen 510 yen.

They also developed “Hokkaido University Okaki (rice crackers)” because they also wanted casual souvenirs.

“Yaki-Tokibi (grilled corn)” is flavored with Hokkaido corn powder and sweet, “Soy Sauce Butter” is flavorful, and you can eat forever. The beautiful color of rice crackers matches with the visual very well.

「焼とうきび」(左)、「醤油バター」(右)は各221円▲“Hokkaido University Okaki” is made from 100% Hokkaido produced glutinous rice. “Yaki-Tokibi” (left) and “Soy Sauce Butter” (right) are 221 yen each.

They collected approximately 50 kinds of rice crackers and compared flavors to create the most delicious rice crackers. After many experiments, they could produce rice crackers with crunchy texture but not dry and melts slowly in the mouth.
