Feel like an artist! Carve the ice and create an “ice glass” - one night only art piece.

You can experience such thing at “Ice Village” which appears in “Hoshino Resorts Tomamu” every winter. The shape of the glass is up to you. Will your artistic mind flourish? Let’s challenge!
What is the Ice Village?“Ice Village” is a magical ice town appears in “Hoshino Resorts Tomamu” during winter. There are not only “Snow & Ice Studio” where you can enjoy “Ice glass making”, but also “Bar Icewood”, where tables and chairs are all made of ice, “Ice Hotel” and “Ice Chapel” where you can do a wedding ceremony.
▲Ice Village is open from approximately mid-December to mid-March from evening to the night. (Depends on the weather)
* Learn more about “Ice Hotel” from the article introduced by Hokkaido Likers
Accommodation experience in “Ice Hotel” Hoshino Resorts Tomamu!
▲There are multiple doom-shaped buildings surrounded by ice in the Ice Village. The Snow & Ice Studio is located in the doom in the left.
Let’s get into the studio!Today, I will try “Ice glass making” at Snow & Ice Studio. Let’s get into the doom shaped like an igloo.
▲The reception of workshop is the bar counter made of ice at the back of this picture above.
Inside looked bigger than I imagined from the outside. I may felt like this because the ceiling was pretty high.
Both sides of the bar counter are connected the next room, well, next doom-shaped ice building. The left is the workshop studio, and the right is the exhibition space to experience the change of lights projected to ice.
▲In the right room, I found an ice sculpture which marks such as heart appears in the air when I blow to the light!
▲In another workshop, you can create “snow crystal replica”. You are able to put a piece of snow crystal to a case, consolidate it with some special liquid, and bring home as an accessory.
Ok, let’s go the workshop studio on the left and start the ice glass making!
Carve! Carve! Carve without hesitation! Until the ice becomes the shape I imaginedAfter registering to the ice glass making workshop, the staff will prepare the equipment set.
▲An ice piece which the center is carved already and few chisels in an ice cylinder.
What kind of shape should I make? The ice piece is rectangular, but the center is already carved so it may be hard to make something like a beer mug with a handle.
On the other hand, create some orthodox glass by carving the tips of ice and by putting some patterns or changing the shape of the bottom may turn out to a pretty glass with less work.
They also display few samples at the reception so check them before carving to get some ideas.
▲I feel like an artist just by holding a chisel! Ok, let’s start carving!
I will try to carve four corners and make the glass rounder.
I first tried to carve one corner. It would be really sad if I put too much power to the chisel and break the glass, so I carved carefully at first. However, I realized that it would take forever if I were too careful. As soon as I learned the right power, and the ice was stronger than I thought, I kept carving without hesitation.
▲Try to make the chisel parallel to the side of ice! I learned the secret very soon as I carve.
I lost words as I started to carve. Without noticing around, I just concentrated on creating my glass!
Carve, carve. Sweep, sweep. Carve, carve. Sweep, sweep.
After I carved out the sharp parts of corners, I held the glass with my left hand and turned around as I carved with a soft chisel and adjusted the shape.
▲In the end, I carved “LIKERS” on the side of the glass. It was difficult to carve “R” and “S” because of the curves.
In the end, I put pieces of ice and snow into the hollows of “LIKERS” and made it white. And finished! It took approximately 30 minutes after I received equipment.
▲The only one in the world glass is finished! And it is only one-night glass, too since it is made of ice. It is the only one night my glass.
Pour some colorful drink to the art piece, and cheers! After you finished with creating the art piece, have some drink with the ice glass!
Leave the Snow & Ice Studio and walk to Bar Icewood in the Ice Village. They will pour one glass of drink for free such as cocktails if you bring your art piece to here! They have alcoholic drinks of course, but also non-alcoholic drinks so those who don’t drink alcohol can enjoy a drink, too.
▲I asked for the drink in Hokkaido Likers color with non-alcoholic blue curacao.
▲Toast to myself with an art piece created by me at the ice bar counter!
After finishing the drink, you can bring your ice glass to home or hotel rooms. However, as it is made of ice, it will melt in a room with heater. Also if you put alcoholic drinks for too long, ice may melt from the inside.
It may be a good idea to enjoy the glass in the Ice Village only so that you can remember just the figure when it was beautiful.
Well, what kind of glass will you carve? Create the only one in the world and only one-night glass made of ice and have a drink!
