Nijukken Road Cherry Blossom Trees in Shizunai is in full bloom during the Golden Week Holidays!
Shizunai Nijukken Road Cherry Blossom Trees in Shin-Hidaka Town is one of the best cherry blossom spots in Hokkaido. It becomes in full bloom in early May every year, and Shizunai Cherry Blossom Festival is held.
The road with about 3,000 cherry trees is one of the greatest throughout Japan
Nijukken Road is about 8 kilometers long and about 36 meters width. The width is just “Nijukken” (* “~ken” is traditional Japanese unit for length), and that is the reason why this road became to be called Nijukken Road. About 7 kilometers area of the road is straight as if it is drawn a line with a ruler on the map. Cherry blossom trees stand along both sides of the road, so this place is called Nijukken Road Lined With Cherry Blossom Trees in Japanese.

About 70% of cherry blossom trees here is Ezo-Yama Sakura. There are also Kasumi Sakura and Miyama Sakura. In early May, the road becomes a cherry blossom road every year! People can drive from the starting point to the ending point of the road, and it feels amazing to drive along the cherry trees! Enjoy driving but keep your eyes on the road.
This about 7 kilometers long Nijukken Road lined with cherry blossom trees is said to be one of the greatest in Japan, and selected as one of “The 100 Best Cherry Blossom in Japan” and “The 100 Best Roads in Japan”.

Nijukken Road was originally the road for the Japanese Imperial Family
Nijukken Road was built in 1903.
It was originally built as the road for the Japanese Imperial Family who come to inspect the Imperial Family’s ranch which used to be in Shin-Hidaka Town.
▲Since the huge Imperial Family’s ranch was built in Meiji Period, many other ranches were built in different parts of Hidaka Region. That made Hidaka Region famous as the horse-breeding center.
Cherry blossom trees were planted a little later, from 1916. The Imperial Family’s ranch staffs started to transplant Ezo-Yama Sakura from mountains in the neighborhood. They took three years to complete filling the road with cherry blossom trees.
Since then, cherry blossom trees keep changing, but the straight road gets pink in early May every year.
▲The characteristic of Shizunai Nijukken Road and the neighborhood is that people can enjoy both cherry blossom sceneries and pasture sceneries.
Festivals will be held in the cherry blossom season!
“Shizunai Cherry Blossom Festival” is held every year during cherry blossom blooming period. In 2017, it is held from May 3 to May 9.
