Monbetsu Drift Ice Adventure 2 – Lunchtime at Marisan No Ki
Today I will introduce you to the best solution to an empty stomach along your drift ice adventure: Crab Chahan! With plenty of delicious crab meat piled on delicious rice, and without even a hint of pretention, you can’t go wrong.
Marisan No Ki’s menu is complete with pasta, fish, and omelet and rice using Hokkaido-made butter. But the dish born out of Monbetsu inspiration is the Crab Chahan (850 Yen), which uses Monbetsu crab.
Depending on the dish, the café can use snow crab, king crab, or even hair crab. Depending on the season, olive oil or soy sauce will flavor the dish.
The large amount of rice seems to be a tradition left from when Monbetsu had a university.
“In those days, students frequented our shop. There are also a lot of young athletes,” said shop owner Onuki Toyoko. Larger portions of rice were needed just to begin to fill the students up.
Marisan No Ki is also known for its coffee made with sun-dried charcoal infused water (the charcoal acts as a purifier for the water).
A little ways away from the city center is the café’s landmark country-style building. Of course I recommend this shop for those who like crab, but also for those wanting something a littler different or for when you just want a really good cup of coffee.
