"Munich Christmas Town" can be found in Odori Park in Sapporo. This event was first held 11 years ago to celebrate the 30th anniversary of sister cities Sapporo, Japan, and Munich, Germany. In addition to Christmas decorations, candy, and general goods, you can also find sausages, mulled wine, and many other foods to enjoy. This mini-city is packed with Christmas cheer!
This event will be open everyday until December 24th and. surrounded by beautiful white snow, is quite a romantic spot.
Let me show you some photographs from the event!
The event is located in Odori Park 2-chome area and when the area's winter illumination turns on at 6:30 the atmosphere instantly becomes more romantic!
The shops here are lined with goods and decorations sure to give any house some extra Christmas spirit.
One of the most popular shops is the "Christmas Card Collection" booth. This shop features unique Christmas goods and postcards created right here in Hokkaido.
There are 406 different kinds of postcards to choose from, from cute to funny, and taking some time to search through them all for the perfect card is a ton of fun! These cards are all made using "corn paper," paper made from the husks of corn sold in Odori park during the summer, giving them a special "Sapporo flavor." If you make a purchase at this booth it will be packaged in the cute bag seen on the left of the photo above. The man running this booth is from Artista Studio and creates many interesting goods and characters, which you can check out below.
"Munich Christmas City" is also well known for its mulled wine, and many visitors come specifically to get a taste. Each shop in the mini-city offers a different taste, so many enjoy tasting the variety for long into the night. There is also an assortment of other authentic German foods available to try.
There are areas to sit and rest or to enjoy the food, but for those who are more interested in walking around and seeing all the shops, be sure to wear warm clothes!!
This year the event has spread into the basement underneath the nearby Sapporo TV tower.
"Munich Christmas City" doesn't just offer German cuisine, there is a multinational selection available. One booth that has become popular this year is the South American themed "MOAI Cafe＆Bar," where visitors can try a cheese pie popular in South America. This 300 yen pie is filled with piping hot cheese. The many different shops also have unique flavors of mulled wine, including cinnamon, orange, and clove, meaning that visitors can pick their own favorites. Also available is a special hot mojito for those looking for a hot drink on a cold night. For those interested in visiting the Sapporo TV Tower, there is a pamphlet available that gives visitors a special discount on the observation deck admission. The view of the Sapporo White Illumination is splendid form the tower, so be sure to give it a try!
Munich Christmas City is an outdoor event, and many of Sapporo's winter nights are cold, so be sure to bundle up before you visit!
