“Hachikyou" - Behold their delicious Tsukko Meshi!

This restaurant holds the Guinness world record for the most ikura (salmon roe) consumed in a single store!
So what do you think? Does this seem like enough per bowl to hold the world record?

"Wow! There's so much ikura!" "That looks delicious!" "I want a bowl right now!" These are just some of the comments you'd expect to hear when you visit this restaurant. However...

When you order the "Tsukko Meshi" at Hachikyou, you have to do better than that! It's against the rules to prepare to order with such a weak mentality. You have to pay proper respect!

Should you choose to order the "Tsukko Meshi" you'll notice a "request from the restaurant" written in the menu next to the dish. The staff will ask you to confirm this request with them as well. The request is simple, simply stating "To show respect and gratitude to those that made this dish possible, please be sure to eat neatly, and don't leave anything left over!" This seems easy, until you see the size of the dish!

It seems like an obvious request, but for the staff at Hachikyou, who have a passionate relationship with the waters around Hokkaido and their fisherman, it's a very serious request. They want to be sure that their customers appreciate the meal as an accomplishment of all those who made it possible, rather than just a spectacle.

The restaurant provides a fantastic atmosphere while still maintaing a serious attitude of food appreciation. This is something that you don't often find when eating out today, but at Hachikyou they don't take their job lightly.

As you can see above, with a chant of "Oi Sa-! Oi Sa-!" the chef piles on the ikura onto the rice until it’s completely covered with eggs! They’ll fill the bowl until the customer says "stop!' or until they can't add any more without spilling the salmon roe everywhere.

If you were born in Hokkaido than enjoying salmon roe at home might not be anything special, and most people think that their home-made ikura bowls are the most delicious around. But just try one serving of "Tsukko Meshi" and you'll find yourself in shock over the amazing flavor! There are also many other seafood selections available, all brought in at Shiretoko Rausu. These include sashimi, boiled fish, baked fish, shrimp, and much more!

Just so you know, this store is extremely popular and it's very difficult to get a reservation, let alone walk in and sit down for a meal. So be sure to call ahead and put your name on the list! If you do go, be sure to try the "Tsukko Meshi" and enjoy the experience of the "Oi Sa-!" chant!
