The plants you see in this picture, with full green leaves are one of the three largest crops in the Abashiri area, beets! (The other two main crops are potatoes and wheat.) These delicious roots serve as the basis for making sugar! During harvest all the leaves above ground are trimmed off, and then the roots are dug up and stored. Beets are planted in the spring and the harvest season runs from October to November. So if you head out to Abashiri in the next few weeks you might be able to spot the farmers out in their fields hard at work!
