We've all seen images of the west coast of the United States in movies and magazines, usually promoting the fashion, music, or wild lifestyle of the region. So imagine my surprise when I first found that same feeling right here in Hokkaido's Hakodate! The feeling can be found at a restaurant named "California Baby," although everyone simply calls it "Cali Baby."
▲ The restaurant is located in an old renovated post office which dates back to the Taisho Era.
▲ Inside you'll find a unique west-coast atmosphere.
I tried my first bite of "Cisco Rice" more than 15 years ago, and the taste and size of the dish hasn't changed a bit since then. It's still the most popular item on the menu, and when I visited the restaurant for this article it seemed like nearly every customer was enjoying a plate.
▲ Cisco Rice - 690 Yen.
"Cisco Rice" features two large sausages on buttered rice, with the whole dish being covered in a delicious meat sauce. The plate provides a number of taste possibilities, from the meat sauce and rice combo, to plain palate refreshing white rice, or just rice and sausage, making it a joy to eat.
Of course, Hakodate is well known for its delicious seafood but for those readers who want to get the full Hakodate experience, be sure to visit Cali Baby and give the Cisco Rice a try!
