About the series: Going around Hokkaido

This project started with a simple question: How long would it take to go around Hokkaido? How many days would we need?

This is the first article of the series to introduce my journey to go around Hokkaido. I will introduce my relaxing trip about visiting cities and towns, enjoying beautiful views, having delicious foods, and encountering to fascinating people.

I hope you will enjoy the series.

Below are the basic rules about the project:

- Basically, drive only National Routes or Hokkaido Roads along coastlines.
- I can use municipal roads near central towns, promontories, etc. However, I try not to use community roads and private roads. - I can use municipal roads near central towns, promontories, etc. However, I try not to use community roads and private roads.
- I drive from the sunrise to the sunset to enjoy the views.
- I divide my journey into a few times according to the coverage schedule.

I had many options for cities and villages along the coastline for the starting point. I chose Otaru City for this project.
Otaru is a port town where lots of car ferries from Honshu area arrive and it’s close to the metropolis Sapporo.

I set “Shukuzu Panorama Observation Deck” at Takashima Promontory in Otaru City as start and goal point.
The observation deck is only 10 to 15 mins from the port, and it was a perfect place as the memorial starting and goal point of the going-around-Hokkaido journey because it is located on the tip of a promontory where we can get the panoramic view of the ocean.

Mileage: Approx. 47 kilometers
The time required: Approx. 95 mins (except breaks)

Check the detailed map from the link below!

Start the journey from Shukuzu Panorama Observation Deck with a beautiful sunrise!

Shukuzu Panorama Observation Deck is located on top of the hill with an elevation of approximately 70 meters.
We can get panoramic views of the Sea of Japan and Hiyoriyama Lighthouse on the tip of Takashima Promontory, Otaru City Herring Mansions, Otaru Aquarium, etc.

According to the weather forecast, the weather was going to be bad in the afternoon affected by the out of season Typhoon in the Honshu area.
The wind was already a bit strong although it was sunny and I could imagine that the weather will turn bad later.

I visited the observation deck in the early morning of a day near the summer solstice. The ocean was shining brightly.

I felt like nature is celebrating the start of my long journey!

I understood like this in favor of myself. Let’s start the journey!

Shukuzu Panorama Observation Deck to Rinyu Morning Market: Have a big breakfast in Otaru!

Shukuzu Panorama Observation Deck to Rinyu Morning Market
Mileage: Approx. 5 kilometers
The time required: Approx. 10 mins

Drive down the hill from Shukuzu Panorama Observation Deck, pass Otaru Aquarium and keep driving the coastal road.

There are many port towns along the Sea of Japan which flourished by herrings in Hokkaido. Otaru City was one of them.
There are many museums and buildings to tell the history at that time in Otaru City.

Ibaraki Family Nakadebari Banya, the building on the right of the route, is one of the fishermen’s building.

ルート上の右手に見えた漁場建築、茨木家中出張番屋(いばらきけ なかでばり ばんや)▲Ibaraki Family Nakadebari Banya, the building on the right of the route, is one of the fishermen’s building.

It is nice to enjoy the atmosphere and culture of the port town from the car, but having fresh seafood is a must-do in this journey. Thanks to the port town, there is a restaurant open from early in the morning in Otaru!

Not only that, the restaurant is on the planned route in this project.

Of course, it is not a fast food or family restaurant. You can enjoy fresh local seafood.

I have to visit there!

I just started the journey, and I had not driven even 10 minutes but decided to take a break here.

Let’s have breakfast.

I visited one of the many morning markets in Otaru City, Rinyu Morning Market.
Among them, I visited the restaurant in Rinyu Asaichi called “Shokujidokoro Non-Non.”

The restaurant opens at 4:00 AM, the same time as Rinyu Morning Market.
This is a perfect place to have breakfast after getting off ferries which arrive early in the morning.

Many tourists and locals alike visit here early in the morning, so the seats get full at 6:00 AM.

I tried “Non-Non Teishoku,” (1,000yen) which the staff told me it’s popular to locals.

のんのん定食(1000円)。本日の焼き魚or煮魚と本日のお刺身3点盛に、小鉢1品、ごはん、味噌汁、香の物がセットの定食▲Non-Non Teishoku (1,000 yen) is a meal set comes with grilled or simmered fish, three pieces of today’s sashimi, one side dish, rice, miso soup, and pickles.

This meal set is satisfying with sashimi and grilled fish.
It was more than enough to fill my appetite.

For those who want to have more seafood, I would recommend their Otaru-Don.

小樽丼(2200円)。ウニ、イクラ、ホタテなどをたっぷり盛った丼▲Otaru-Don (2,200 yen). It’s a rice bowl with plenty of seafood such as sea urchin, ikura, scallop, etc. (The picture is provided by Oshokujidokoro Non-Non)

Not only that, you can bring seafood which you bought in the market to the restaurant and they can cook it for you!

You can have it as sashimi, rice bowl, or meal set of grilled fish or simmered fish.

It would be fun to have your favorite seafood in the way you like.

Article by Hokkaido Likers about Rinyu Morning Market:

Rinyu Morning Market to Zenibako Station: Leave the town of Otaru and start the journey!

Rinyu Morning Market to Zenibako Station
Mileage: Approx. 18 kilometers
The time required: Approx. 30 mins

Now I filled my appetite and ready to go!

▲I kept driving as I saw the buildings along Otaru Canal on my right.

There was Otaru Port in the left and Wing Bay Otaru, the shopping mall, on the right and the road merged to the National Route no.5.
There was a little traffic because it was morning commute time.

I kept driving a long uphill with curves towards the right and left, and a gentle slope continued after I passed a tunnel.

The car reaches to Zenibako district when houses and restaurants appear along the roads.

I turned left here and left the National Route no.5 to head to Zenibako Station.

朝8時過ぎのJR銭函駅。通勤通学の人たちが多数乗り降りしています▲JR Zenibako Station at about 8:00 AM. Many students and business people arrive and leave the station to commute.

Many fancy cafes, etc., appeared recently and I am very interested in the area.
However, it was too early in the morning, and I had plenty of foods in Otaru City, so I just passed the area this time.

Zenibako Station to Asobeach Ishikari: the ocean became closer!

Zenibako Station to Asobeach Ishikari
Mileage: Approx. 23 kilometers
The time required: Approx. 50 mins

I kept driving towards Ishikari Bay New Port after driving and leaving National Route 337 from the road in front of Zenibako Station.

This area is famous for the music festival “RISING SUN ROCK FESTIVAL” in the mid-summer, and many people visit here to participate in the festival.
As it was a morning on a weekday, many trucks and trailers passed near the port with cars to commute to workplaces.

左手に港湾設備や水路を眺めながら進みます▲I kept driving as I saw port facilities and waterways on the left.

After passing the port area, where many large-sized motor vehicles, I drove narrow roads with probably only 1.5-lane. There were grasslands on both sides of the road.

This neighborhood is near the mouth of the Ishikari River.

This area is a spit: a narrow landform between the sea and the river.

I headed towards the tip of narrow landform as far as I can by a car.

After driving the narrow road for a few minutes, an open field appeared. It was “Asobeach Ishikari.”

海が間近に!▲The ocean is very close!

The beach will be filled with people in summer, but I saw only a few people in this season.

Let’s see the almost deserted beach.

さっきまでいた石狩湾新港、右奥には小樽の高島岬まで、よーく見えます!▲I could see Ishikari Bay New Port which I was there just a few minutes ago and Takashima Promontory in Otaru far away on the right. The view was amazing!

It is only a part of Hokkaido where I am planning to go around, but it is somewhat emotional to see the area where I passed.

I felt really nice!

砂浜の脇には炭を捨てる場所も。海水浴といえば海辺にテントを張ってバーベキューをするという、北海道ならではのご当地文化の一端を発見▲There was a garbage can to trash charcoals by the beach. Outdoor kitchens will appear in summer and charcoal garbage area will be built in a different place. I saw a part of Hokkaido’s culture where they set up a tent and barbeque on the beach in summer.

I decide to drive more after enjoying the view of the beach for a while.

こんなかんじの道を進みます▲I kept driving the road like this.

Asobeach Ishikari to Hamanasu-no-oka Park: the lighthouse is very photogenic

Asobeach Ishikari to Hamanasu-no-oka Park
Mileage: Approx. 1 kilometer
The time required: Approx. 5 mins

The next destination was very close.

You will see the visitor center and the parking of “Hamanasu-no-oka Park” on the right after driving along the road and turn right.

This is the furthest point you can go by car.

Hamanasu-no-oka Park is a park located in a spit between the Ishikari River and the Sea of Japan. As the name expresses, many seaside plants including Hamanasu (Japanese rose) grow wild in the park.

毎年6月下旬から7月上旬にかけてハマナスが咲き乱れます!▲Hamanasu flowers bloom from mid-June to early-July every year!

There are promenades in the park. I recommend taking a walk in the park!

It started to rain as I arrived at the park when I visited, so I had to give up walking in the park.

However, there are multiple facilities to learn about the history of Ishikari near “Benten Rekishi Park” which is about 1 kilometer away from Hamanasu-no-oka Park.

The museum is indoor so you can enjoy the exhibition even on a rainy day.

This is the end of the first article of the series.
In the next article, I will go north along the Sea of Japan by National Route no. 231, commonly called “Ororon Line,” from Hamanasu-no-oka Park.

I will stop by Michi No Eki Ishikari “Ai Road Atsuta” and drive to former Mashike Station in Mashike-Cho.
