“Betsukai Jumbo Scallop Burger” was born from the unpleasant experience of young dairy farmers!

Everyone would feel some kind of challenging spirit when they hear the words like “extra large food” or “jumbo size” as they have a huge visual impact and photogenic. 

Speaking of extra large food and local specialties, Betsukai-Cho in the Nemuro Region, located in the eastern Hokkaido, is adapting that to advertise about the town. 

Especially “Betsukai Jumbo Scallop Burger” won the first championship of the Japan Local Burgers Grand Prix. It is surely a very popular food in Japan.

Open your mouth widely to eat the burger and drink up the milk poured in the extra large glass. 

Betsukai Jumbo Scallop burger comes in a big portion, making it stand out the characteristics of Hokkaido. It was born from the serious feelings of young dairy farmers in Betsukai-Cho. 

I asked the story to Hideaki Kusaka, the chairman of Betsukai Jumbo Scallop Burger Regional Revitalization Association.

What is Betsukai Jumbo Scallop Burger?

Put thick scallop from Nokke in Betsukai-Cho deep-fried in the spring roll skin and marinated vegetables or mozzarella cheese from Betsukai between the buns. 

That is Betsukai Jumbo Scallop Burger. 


▲It also is interesting visually, and that is another attraction. 


And there are three requirements to call Betsukai Jumbo Scallop Burger: 

Use three original sauces to the top and the bottom of the buns and the marinated ingredient. 

Burgers must not be ready-to-eat. It has to be served in an open sandwich style and let customers make the burger themselves. 

Betsukai Jumbo Milk and Betsukai Jumbo Scallop Burger must be served with two other dishes. The one must be french fries made with Hokkaido potatoes, and another one must be an original side dish.


Every shop must follow the above three rules.  
 

Why does the burger always come with a glass of milk?

I can understand that they serve milk as a set menu because it’s Betsukai-Cho’s specialty, but why can’t they call the burger “Betsukai Jumbo Scallop Burger” if it weren’t served with a glass of milk?

It seems like the reason is hidden in the story of how Betsukai Jumbo Scallop Burger was born. 

Betsukai-Cho is the biggest producer of milk in Japan. However, there was one time that they produced too much milk and could not find anyone to sell the milk. Farmers had put so much effort to grow cows and produce milk. 
The dairy farmers had to throw away all the milk. 


They did not want that to happen again. They wanted local people to drink more milk and understand about dairy farming business in the local region. So the young dairy farmers developed “Betsukai Jumbo Milk” with the extra large glass. 

And Betsukai Jumbo Scallop Burger was born because they wanted to make some local food to have together with Betsukai milk

Therefore, the burger was not developed if Betsukai Jumbo Milk was not born. 


Also, Betsukai-Cho is famous for fishing, not only for dairy farming. 
They have precious resources of Hokkaido seafood! Including the extra large scallop in the size of a fist, fresh salmon and Hokkai Shima Ebi (shrimp)! 

Milk and scallops are the two most significant local specialty of Betsukai-Cho

 

Places where you can try Betsukai Jumbo Scallop Burger in Betsukai-Cho

Betsukai Jumbo Scallop Burgers are served in seven places now: “Futaba Sushi”, “Cafe Oak”, “Restaurant Hamanasu”, “Roman”, “Restaurant Shikakui Taiyo (In the roadside station Odaitou)”, “Bekkai Kourakuen”, and “Restaurant NOTSUKE”. 

It might be fun to try as much as Betsukai Jumbo Scallop Burgers as you can because each shop offers unique side dishes. 

Please note that Betsukai Jumbo Scallop Burgers are not available for souvenirs or online shopping. 

However, they sometimes appear on various events in Hokkaido so there are many chances to try the burger even if you can’t travel all the way to Betsukai.

They sold over 10,000 burgers in a week when they participated in the exhibition in Sapporo. You can see how it’s popular, right? 

 

Betsukai Jumbo Scallop Burger in Futaba Sushi

I tried Betsukai Jumbo Scallop Burger at Futaba Sushi, one of the seven places which serve the burger. The sushi restaurant is owned by Mr. Kusaka, the chairman of Betsukai Jumbo Scallop Burger Regional Revitalization Association. 

This is a long-establishes sushi restaurant opened in 1955.

The glass of milk is served first, then the ingredients before becoming a burger came. 

This is because they want customers to take time to drink the milk and enjoy making burgers like playing with it. 


▲This is how it turned out. 


First, put the miso sauce and aurora sauce onto the buns. 

Then put the spring roll, lettuce, marinated vegetables, and some mayos and put the top bun!

Put the burger in the paper bag with the illustration of “Ryoushi-Kun”, etc., the mascots of Betsukai-Cho and open your mouth widely!

The mixture of a spring roll with the strong flavor of scallops and sourness of marinated vegetables are fantastic. Have a bite and drink a sip of milk. 

Repeating this, again and again, is the biggest attraction of Betsukai Jumbo Scallop Burger.

French fries made with Hokkaido potatoes and original rice croquette are also delicious! 

Rice croquette uses sushi rice and Betsukai cheese. It is nice that they made a side dish that only sushi restaurant in Betsukai-Cho could make. 


Betsukai Jumbo Scallop Burgers are delicious and fun to make. Experience the attraction of this burger when there is a chance to stop by Betsukai-Cho.
