“Ryuhyo-kaido Abashiri” is a Michi No Eki faced to the Sea of Okhotsk and had lots of attractions both in summer and winterYou know that there are many attractive Michi No Eki (roadside rest areas) all over Japan from south to north, right?
Michi No Eki “Ryuhyo-kaido Abashiri” is located at 30 minutes drive from Memanbetsu Airport, the entrance to the Okhotsk area.
▲Michi No Eki “Ryuhyo-kaido Abashiri” is faced to the Sea of Okhotsk
People in the region call the blue sky and blue color of the Sea of Okhotsk as “Okhostk Blue”. Visitors can enjoy the panoramic views of beautiful blue sea and sky at this Michi No Eki.
It feels like you are in an air-conditioned room when you stand here and feel the sea breeze. You can refresh with the nice wind if you come here in summer.
▲Abashiri Drift Ice Sightseeing & Icebreaker Ship “Aurora”
Many people who come to Abashiri for the winter sight “drift ice” stop by here because it becomes the arrival and departure station of Abashiri Drift Ice Sightseeing & Icebreaker Ship “Aurora” in winter, the drift ice season.
The Sea of Okhotsk looks totally different in summer and winter.
“Ryuhyo-kaido Abashiri” is the Michi No Eki where people can enjoy totally different attractions in each season.
The movie sets from the film “Kita No Sakuramori” has become a permanent exhibition at Michi No Eki “Ryuhyo-kaido Abashiri”!Have you watched the film “Kita No Sakuramori (Sakura Guardian in the North)” already? It’s a story about a mother and children from Southern Sakhalin to Hokkaido after the war, and Abashiri City appears as one of the filming locations in the film.
And people who have watched the film are familiar of “Ezure Shokudo (Ezure Diner)”, right? Yes, it’s a diner which Tetsu Ezuru, the leading actress Sayuri Yoshinaga played the role, opened in Abashiri City.

The movie sets of “Ezure Shokudo” has become a permanent exhibition in Michi No Eki “Ryuhyo-kaido Abashiri” from January 19, 2018, and movie fans enjoy the exhibition.
▲The exhibition became true by efforts of “Takahashi Group”, the local company which cooperated the location shooting.
“Ezure Shokudo” reproduces a shabby house after the war realistically. Those who haven’t watched the film may become interested in the movie by seeing the exhibition.
Enjoy local foods at Michi No Eki “Ryuhyo-kaido Abashiri”You must be curious about what kind of local foods the Michi No Eki offers. Yes, there are many delicious local foods at Michi No Eki “Ryuhyo-kaido Abashiri”!
▲The entrance of the food court “Kinemakan” on the second floor has Showa Period’s atmosphere.
Abashiri City is known for being filming locations used in various Japanese films. There must be people who feel nostalgic from the atmosphere of Kinemakan, the food court on the second floor, on the other hand, there must be young people who think it's fresh.
▲The food court has a panoramic view of the Sea of Okhotsk.
It’s undoubtedly a comfortable time to enjoy meals at the bar seats as you see Okhotsk blue sea and sky.
They offer Japanese, Western, and Chinese casual dishes such as ramen, sashimi rice bowl, soba, pasta, fried rice, curry, etc., with reasonable prices for both single visitors and families.
I also recommend trying local dishes such as “Abashiri Zangi-don (rice bowl with fried chicken)” and “Abashiri Champon” which has already been introduced in Hokkaido Likers.
The takeaway area on the first floor offers limited local foods such as “Abashiri Zangi Manju” and “Chanchan Yaki Manju”.
“Abashiri Burger” is a unique hamburger using Chinese yam, pink salmon, and golden wasabi (horse radish) as an accent.
▲The burger is huge that I could not fit in my mouth!
I enjoyed the great balance of the texture of thick sliced Chinese yam and thick, soft fried pink salmon! It made me think where I start eating, but it looks the most delicious to forget everything and just bit it.
▲Abashiri milk 100% soft serve! “Ryuhyo Soft Serve” is limitedly sold at Michi No Eki “Ryuhyo-kaido Abashiri”
“Ryuhyo Soft Serve (drift ice soft serve)” is a soft serve inspired by drift ice which floats on the Sea of Okhotsk. They add the fresh lemon and mint flavor to the natural flavor of milk.
You can enjoy the unique crunchy texture like drift ice with candy toppings.
