A road trip along the west coast of Rishiri Island! You can find strangely shaped rocks and delicious spring water!

There are many interesting sights along the west coast of Rishiri Island. Strangely shaped rocks which look like a bear and a face of a person, and red shrine floating in the ocean, and delicious spring water at the foot of Mt. Rishiri! Stop by each sight as you drive your car along the beautiful coastline of the Sea of Japan.

“The human face shaped rock” and “The sleeping bear rock”

The sights I want to introduce are scattered along Hokkaido Road No. 108. It is located in the south, on the way to Senposhi Misaki Park from downtown of Kutsugata Rishiri-cho.

The first one is “The human face shaped rock”. Can you see a rock sticking out from the rocky ground? There is a white Hachimaki (a Japanese band accessory to put on one’s forehead) on top of the rock. Is it only me who feels like the rock looks like a face of human seen from a side?

By the way, we can view the coastline like this when it’s sunny!

And the place where we can see a bear in Rishiri Island, where bears don’t live, is “The sleeping bear rock” next to “The human face shaped rock”. When it’s seen from the observation point, the rock looks like a bear sleeping on the ocean. The two tipping points look like ears of a bear. Gaze the rock and work with your imagination!

“Kita No Itsukushima Bentengu Shrine” and “Reiho spring water”

Keep going, and you will find “Kita No Itsukushima Bentengu Shrine”. There are a torii gate and a shrine at the back. The bright red color of the torii, shrine, and handrail are eye-catching!

The shrine was built because a ship almost wrecked from a storm got saved by Benten goddess (a goddess in Buddhism). People built the shrine to thank Benten and worship her.

On the other hand, the rocky ground under the shrine is called “Ryujin No Iwa”. There is an old legend that something came to the area with a rumbling of the earth disappeared around that rock.

The last sight is “Reiho spring water”. It’s a spring water at the foot of Mt. Rishiri.

利尻島の麗峰湧水

People who work out around the area stop by the spring water to sip water. I met a man who came from Tokyo to Rishiri Island and enjoying hiking and biking when I covered the place.

“The water is cold and delicious,” the man said. The water is said that takes more than 30 years to come up to the surface, after rain and snow melt water penetrating from the mountain surface.

Those were the sights on a road trip along the west coastline. All the sights I introduced above has parking strips, so park your car there and enjoy!
