The hidden attractions of Sapporo TV Tower
Sapporo TV Tower creates great scenery and also is a landmark. Not only viewing the tower but also wouldn’t you like to clim up to the observatory to take a glance at the night view of Sapporo, which is selected as New Three Major Night View of Japan? To tell the truth, there are rare attractions and special plans that are not well known.
The observation deck with the great view of Odori Park
The observation deck is at an elevation of 90 meters. Many high-rise apartments and office buildings are being built in Sapporo city recently, so there are places that are taller than the observation deck of Sapporo TV Tower. However, this is the only place to view Odori Park from top! You’ll be amazed by the astonishingly beautiful view.

At Odori Park, numerous events are held throughout year. You will be able to view those events such as Sapporo Snow Festival and YOSAKOI Soran Festival from the top. However, it does have some distance so you would need a binocular telescope (!?) if you want to see closely.

The observatory offers a 360° view, which means you can view every direction of Sapporo city.
Let’s not only see the view far away, but also at the feet. The best spot is here! It’s called “Window of thrills” (“怖窓” in Japanese).
▲It may be hard to imagine from this picture but.. if you put the camera right down… it’s actually very scary.
A part of windows in the south-east direction extends from floor to ceiling. Moreover, the upper part of glass window is slightly lean. Which is, if you look down as you come close to the window, you will misunderstand if you are going to fall down.
Near this window, there is “The miraculous well”, where you can see directly beneath the TV Tower.
Unofficial but very popular character “TV Dad”
After enjoining the view, how about visiting “TV Dad Shrine”?
▲The highest shrine in urban Sapporo
Although the shrine architecture is based on the authentic Ise Shrine, the guardian lion dog statues are TV Dad and a family member of TV Dad, Mom.
There are offertory box and omikuji.
Now, let’s try my luck.
Put coins and turn the handle, and you’ll get a capsule with a fortune paper in it.
▲Yeah, I got excellent luck! Believe or don’t believe… only depend on how you think!?
To tell the truth, there is an official character called Tawakky. However, “TV Dad” came out right after the debut of Tawakky gained popularity immediately. No chance for Tawakky…!? TV Dad is everywhere in Sapporo TV Tower.
▲A resting spot called “TV Dad Nohohon Park”. It’s all red.
Photo booth stickers, elongated coins, snacks in the observation deck, and resting spot at the foot are all surrounded by TV Dad. In the underground, there is a snack similar to teriyaki called “TV Dad yaki”.
TV Dad is an indispensable character to Sapporo TV tower.
You can also walk down from observation deck to the floor! A hidden attraction is here as well..!
To the observation deck, you can reach by elevator and it takes only a minute. Usually, you will use the elevator to go down also.
However, there are few days in the year that you can walk down to the ground by using steps!
The steps has balustrades and fences but it’s outside! You can see the ground and wind directly hits you. This IS really thrilling!
▲You can see the ground! Better not wear skirts!?
Actually, there is a hidden attraction on the way to the ground. There are parts of fences that has circular holes. Can you come up with ideas what they are for?
▲There are 2 holes between ground and top.
Answer is, a hole to put the lens of camera.
Fences are disturbance when you try to shoot the view. By putting the lens in the hole, you will be able to take beautiful pictures. If you try to take the picture in the observation deck, there are glass windows and it is hard to take beautiful pictures. The hight will be lower but if you want to take a beautiful shot of Odori Park, here is a hidden spot!
▲The last part of the steps, near the ground is colored red
New Three Major Night View of Japan will be yours!? You can reserve the observation deck!
The observation deck at night is a perfect place to view Sapporo night view which is selected as one of the New Three Major Night View of Japan together with Kobe and Nagasaki.
▲The view of the west side. You will see the night view of Odori Park.
You can REALLY make it all yours! Well, if I be exact, may be it’s for you two.
That is, a plan to privately rent the observation deck!
You will be able to privately rent for 30 minutes after the Tower closes, and also will get a present of half bottle wine. In addition, Sapporo TV Tower illumination will light up in special colors!
Will you spend time with your love? Or will you propose?
