Hokkaido is a cold and snowy place for half of the year. For the animals winter is a harsher ordeal than for us human counterparts. When the snows are really heavy, like they were this past winter season, food in the mountains becomes hard to find and we are treated to sights like this. Ezo deer venturing into view in their search for food. They will dig through the roadside snow to get to the grass below and sometimes eat the bark right off trees.
Every time I catch sight of animals scavenging for food I am reminded of the difficult time that winter gives us all.
